Worship Him
With Jess Henderson - Worship and Creative Team Leader C3 London
Our whole world has been changed more than once in the space of a few months. No one has been left untouched by the events of 2020. In a time like this how do we process? How do we make sense?
It starts in our prayer and worship. Way back in March I read an incredible article by writer and theologian NT Wright on the return of the Lament. I was profoundly reminded of how God has provided a way for us to process by turning to Him in prayer and worship;
“But perhaps what we need more than either is to recover the biblical tradition of lament. Lament is what happens when people ask, “Why?” and don’t get an answer. It’s where we get to when we move beyond our self-centred worry about our sins and failings and look more broadly at the suffering of the world.”

Our God is big enough to hold our praise and our petition! Faith is multifaceted, leaving room for the pain and complaint amongst the positive and praise. It’s all throughout the Psalms.
Psalm 13 begins like this;
How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long shall I take counsel in my soul?
Having sorrow in my heart daily?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?
But ends in a vow of praise;
My heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the LORD,
Because He has dealt bountifully with me.
When we worship and bring all our fears and concerns to the altar, our circumstances become secondary as we recognise and acknowledge that HE IS KING and that never changes. HE IS GOOD and that never changes despite the fact that we may not be able to make sense of the world around us.
Lamentations 3:25-29 says this;
GOD proves to be good to the man who passionately waits, to the woman who diligently seeks. It’s a good thing to quietly hope, quietly hope for help from GOD. It’s a good thing when you’re young to stick it out through the hard times.
When life is heavy and hard to take, go off by yourself. Enter the silence. Bow in prayer. Don’t ask questions: Wait for hope to appear. MSG
Let us be a church who learns to lament AND praise, to seek him and wait on our hope.
