Dear London. Part 1

Letters to our city. Written by Claire Crowther

Dear London,

A good hairdresser is worth their weight in gold and Sam* knows exactly how I want my hair to look and has even taught me how to curl my dead straight hair (a miracle!). Over the years we have shared our life updates with each other; major life events, milestones - the good and bad. I've been on the journey with her as she got engaged and married, then as she and her husband bought their first home together, sharing the excitement and celebration that she felt. Sam is very driven, she has trained to become the salon manager, progressing in her career, taking pride in her achievements and running a tight ship!

It was such a relief after months of lock down hair to see her again for my usual transformation session and to hear how she had been getting on decorating her flat. I soon learned that Coronavirus wasn't the only difficult situation for Sam, she and her husband had separated and were in the process of divorcing, the flat was on the market and Sam was living with her uncle whilst she waited for it to sell. My heart hurt for her. Her life had been on track, certain, predictable and secure, now, as she approaches her 30th birthday, that future has completely disappeared.

It's difficult to know what to say in these circumstances, there aren't really any words that seem adequate. I offered up what I could in the way of comfort though feeling woefully inadequate for what she was experiencing. As I reflected on Sam's situation later that day it dawned on me; what if nobody has ever prayed for her? I can't heal her hurt or change her situation but as someone who has faith in God and his promises I can pray. In fact what a privilege to potentially be that one person who heard, cared and did pray. An extension of the Father's heart for His children.

I don't know what will happen next in Sam's life but I believe by faith that my prayers for her have been heard, and that they are working right now for her. So, friends, is there someone who is on your mind at the moment that needs you to be that one person?

So you dearest London, if you need prayer, do let me know.

Sincerely,

Claire
